The Pamplona Bullring: A Historic Symbol of the San Fermín Festival
Pamplona, Navarre. The Pamplona Bullring is one of the most iconic landmarks of the San Fermín festival. Inaugurated on July 7, 1922, its history is closely intertwined with the city’s famous bull runs and bullfighting traditions.

A Journey Through Its History
In the past, bullfighting events in Pamplona were held in the Plaza del Castillo. In 1843, a permanent bullring was constructed, which was later replaced by other venues. Following a fire that destroyed the previous structure in 1921, the current building—designed by architect Francisco Urcola—was erected.

In 1967, the bullring underwent a major expansion, led by architect Rafael Moneo, which increased its capacity to accommodate thousands of spectators.

The Conclusion of the Famous Bull Runs
Each morning, from July 7 to 14, participants take part in the traditional San Fermín bull runs, racing through the streets of Pamplona until they reach the bullring. This event is one of the most well-known aspects of the festival, drawing the attention of visitors and media from all over the world.

A Symbol of Pamplona
Beyond its role as a venue for bullfighting, the bullring represents an essential part of Pamplona’s historical and cultural heritage. Its existence is linked to the evolution of the San Fermín festival—a tradition that remains a core component of the city’s identity.

Nearly a century after its inauguration, the Pamplona Bullring remains one of the most recognizable settings for a festival that brings together thousands of people every year.
